Thinking about developing a new almond orchard in a high boron setting? Picking the wrong rootstock when water or soil is high in boron (<1 ppm) can endanger tree health and orchard yields.
UC ANR, UC Davis and the Almond Board of California have been working for the last decade to evaluate the best options in high boron settings to sustain yields while making use of sub-optimal water and soil.
Come join UCCE Orchard Advisor Kat Jarvis-Shean & UC Davis Professor Patrick Brown to see with your own eyes nine different rootstock options and talk through the ten years of data we've gathered to evaluate their merits.
The event is free, but please register below to help our planning.

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 30, 2020
Contact: Colusa County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office
Mysterious and Unsolicited Seed Shipments Arriving in Colusa County
The California Department of Agriculture (CDFA) has become aware of a number of reports regarding “mysterious and unsolicited seed shipments from China.” These shipments have been arriving at homeowner and business locations throughout the country, including here in Colusa County. The package contents typically list the contents as jewelry, toys, or a number code.
The CDFA is currently in communication with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to determine what the actions will be for these seed packages. In the meantime, CDFA is instructing residents not to open any unsolicited seed packets received. In addition, please DO NOT PLANT or dispose of the seeds. Instead, please immediately contact the Colusa County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office if you come into possession of these unsolicited seeds, and we will arrange to pick up the seeds or you may drop them off at our office.
Seeds that are legally sold to residents of California must go through proper channels in order to protect California’s multi-billion dollar agricultural industry. Colusa County is one of California’s significant seed producing locations. Seeds with unknown origin and those that have not been properly inspected, treated, or tested may have a significant impact on our local industry and ag based economy.
If you have received these seeds, please contact our office via the options below to arrange for delivery or pick up. If you have planted

Request for help from PCAs regarding class review
May 27, 2020
Help, please.
I’m looking for a few experienced PCAs or growers/managers to watch an on-line class for airblast sprayer calibration training and give it a quick review. The class has to be up and running smoothly by Sept. 1 and to do so we need to get reviews by people who are potential users (PCA’s, growers, etc) by June 1 .
What’s involved?
- Take a short pre-test (10 questions, T/F and multiple choice)
- Watch the class. There are some quick calibration calculations involved, but this shouldn’t be difficult (go quickly). This should take about 2-2.5 hours. [There is good educational content in this class so while it takes valuable time, it’s not wasted time.]
- Taking a quick post-test
- Giving some feedback on the experience of taking the class.
- Total time, about 3 hours.
I know there isn’t much (any?) extra time now and I wish I could be making this request in the fall or early winter, but to get the final posted by Sept 1, the reviews are needed now.
For taking the time to do this review, we are offering free access several to a UC IPM on-line class with 1-2 CE units. These classes usually cost around $50. If you are interested/willing, please send me an e-mail (or call my cell) and I’ll get you the link to the class, the review report form, and info for the free (to you) on-line class from IPM.
Thanks for considering this request, especially at this time of year.
